CORONA DEL MAR — Senior Joel Betonte won the 100-meter event and helped the Sailors 4x100- and 4x400-meter relay teams win, as Newport Harbor edged out Back Bay rival Corona del Mar in a season opener for both schools Wednesday.

Betonte finish the 100 in 11.4 seconds and the 4x100 team finished in 45 seconds and the 4x400 team in 3 minutes, 32.6 seconds.

Newport Harbor junior Cecil Whiteside, who placed sixth in the discus throw last year at the CIF State championships, won the discus throw (173 feet, 7 inches) and shot put (56-10) events Wednesday.

Getting senior Justin Adams to place second in the triple jump, and third in each the high jump and long jump proved to be beneficial to the Sailors, said Coach Nowell Kay.

Newport Harbor swept the throwing events.

CdM junior Sebastien Welch won the 800, 1,600 and 3,200 events, finishing in 2:08.6, 4:41.6 and 10:16.9, respectively.

CORONA DEL MAR — Junior Sami Stern swept the shot put and discus throw events in the Sea Kings’ Battle of the Bay victory against Newport Harbor Wednesday.

Stern recorded a 29-foot, 10 1/2 -inch mark in the shot put and a 93-6 in the discus.

Junior Melanie Powers won the 1,600 meters in 5 minutes, 13.4 seconds for the Sea Kings. She finished tied for first in the 3,200 (11:34) with teammates Laura Bilder and Marissa Cummings.

CdM Coach Bill Sumner said the rain didn’t have too much of an affect, saying it stopped raining 90 minutes before the meet began.

The Sea Kings will be at the 30th annual Irvine Invitational on March 13.

Coach Nowell Kay said junior Elizabeth Eddy made her track and field debut for Newport Harbor.

Eddy, a strong soccer player, placed first in the 100 in 12.8 seconds and 200 in 26.6 seconds.

MISSION VIEJO — Senior Camden Nicholson and junior Josh Starnes each finished at one-over-par 37, earning medalist honors for the Sea Kings at Mission Viejo Country Club Wednesday.

Michael Moorhead shot a 38 for CdM (1-0), followed by John Davenport (41) and Jono Keedy (44).

SANTA ANA — Marcus Kiel and Travis Russell both shot three-over-par 39 to help lead the Sailors to the nonleague win at Santa Ana Country Club Wednesday.

Ericson Klein (40), Zach Eddy (40) and Mychael Clark (41) also contributed for Newport (2-0).

ANAHEIM — Lightning freshman Ahmed Eltamanai shot even-par 35 for medalist honors in the nonleague match at Dad Miller Golf Course Wednesday.

Mac Mace shot 40, while Jared Hoffman, Steve Choi and Kam Fuji each had 41 for Sage (1-1).

 

BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL

Beckman def. Estancia

IRVINE — Junior setter Tyler Sullivan recorded 18 assists and two services aces in the Eagles’ 25-12, 26-24, 25-21 season-opening loss Wednesday.

Outside hitter Eric Mickelson had 11 kills and two digs.

Estancia plays host to JSerra Tuesday at 5 p.m.
