MANHATTAN BEACH — The Newport Harbor High boys’ soccer team overcame a one-goal deficit to grab a 2-1 win in the first round of the CIF Southern Section Division I playoffs Friday.
The Sailors (12-6-4) trailed, 1-0, 15 minutes in, but senior Will Munoz made good on a bicycle kick after junior Dillan Freiberg’s long throw-in to tie the game.
Junior Chase Nugent scored the game-winner in the 45th minute, putting in a rebound after a shot from Munoz. Goalkeeper Kyle Evans had five saves for Newport Harbor, which will play against Crespi Wednesday in the second round at a site to be determined by coin flip. Crespi won, 1-0, at Mater Dei.
