LA JOLLA — No. 12-ranked UC Irvine defeated Long Beach State, 10-7, in the fifth-place game Sunday, after earlier beating Cal State Northridge, 8-5, at Canyonview Aquatic Complex.
Against the No. 15-ranked 49ers, senior Julia Franchar scored a career-high six goals to pace the Anteaters (6-1).
Gianna Rossi added two goals for UCI.
Against Northridge, Rossi had three goals, while Ashling Taylor, a senior out of Newport Harbor High, chipped in two.

IRVINE — Freshman Courtney Byron won in singles and doubles to pace the Anteaters in the nonconference home match Sunday.
Byron defeated Maria Dolores Pazo, 6-3, 3-6, 6-1, at No. 4 singles, then teamed with Corona del Mar High product Miranda Young to earn an 8-5 triumph at No. 3 doubles.
Brooke Bartlett (No. 2), Rebecca Kwan (No. 5) and Heidi Kaloi (No. 6) also posted singles wins for UCI (2-2).
The Anteaters open Big West Conference play Wednesday at UC Riverside.
The match is at 1:30 p.m.
