Three Sailors selected first-team all-leaguers

Newport Harbor High junior Katey Thompson and seniors Mary Buckingham and Arielle Lysacek were named first-team All-Sunset League in girls’ volleyball after helping the Sailors finish second in league.
Thompson, a middle blocker, led the Sailors (24-8, 8-2 in league) with 263 kills, 66 blocks and 36 aces to go with 26 digs.
Thompson was the Newport-Mesa Dream Team Player of the Year.
Buckingham, an outside hitter headed to UC Berkeley, finished with 245 kills, 108 digs, 25 service aces and 13 blocks. She was a second-team pick in 2007.
Lysacek, a setter, had 513 assists, 72 kills, 42 digs, 24 aces and 13 blocks.
Newport Harbor advanced to the quarterfinals of the CIF Southern Section Division I-AA playoffs.
Junior outside hitter Kirby Burnham and junior libero Kelly Heenan each made the second team. Heenan is a two-time second-team selection.
Receiving honorable mention were senior middle blocker Alice Cope and senior libero Carly Cotton.
Los Alamitos senior libero Kelly Holford was named MVP.
