First-place day for Harbor

The Newport Harbor High surft team won all six heats while recording five first-place finishes to beat Estancia, 75-51, at 56th Street Thursday.

Newport Harbor, which improved to 6-1, won the shortboard competition, 51-33, winning all four heats.

The first heat saw Chad Morabito take first place with Estancia’s Nick Fowler placing second and Harbor’s Rusty Sary placing third.

In the second shortboard heat Daniel Netzer scored a 5.0 average wave score, but not good enough to beat out Estancia’s Eric Mickelson, who scored a 5.2 high for the contest.

Matt Porteous placed third in heat two.

The third shortboard heat saw the Sailors sweep the top three positions with Cort Adler scoring a 4.0 taking first and Zach Morabito and Charlie Hawthorne placing second and third, respectively.

Jake Caughill’s 4.3 score was good enough for first place in the final heat and Estancia’s Charlie Umansky placed second with Andrew Wilson from Newport taking third.

Newport’s Andy Delorme took first place in the longboard competition, as the Sailors won, 13-8. Placing third was teammate Aaron Cervantes. Estancia’s Jack Belli placed second.

The bodyboard competition was a very close contest.

Joe Suzuki’s 5.17 score led the Sailors to a 11-10 victory as Umansky of Estancia placed second.

Newport’s next contest is against Mater Dei at Brookhurst Street on Wednesday.
