MAILBAG:
Sheriff Sandra Hutchens deserves our applause and support for ordering a review of the more than 400 concealed-weapons permits. It would be irresponsible of her to not do this. The sheriff has rightly determined that the safety of the community is the greater good to be preserved over those who seek special privileges. Permits should be rare and reluctantly granted.
It is reasonable to require the person who wishes to carry a concealed weapon to pass a rigorous review process, based on convincing necessity and the history of the person. Only then should a permit be issued, and  as with any permit  it should be for a limited time so that the case might be regularly reviewed with no less vigor. Applicants presenting dubious or borderline reasons should be denied.
I, for one, feel less safe knowing that persons, other than peace officers, are carrying concealed weapons. It disappoints me that the Board of Supervisors capitulated to protesters and has advised the sheriff to ease up on her permit review. I wish they were more courageous. And I hope the sheriff does not capitulate.
