Charges against girlfriend rise to attempted murder

A Costa Mesa woman arrested Wednesday on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon after a fight with her boyfriend saw the charges escalate to attempted murder Thursday, when she pleaded not guilty in court.

Gemma Ramirez, 22, pleaded not guilty to charges of attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon, corporal injury and a sentencing enhancement for allegedly using a knife when police say she stabbed her boyfriend in their home early Wednesday

Police were called to Ramirez’s home in the 100 block of East 18th Street just before 2 a.m. Wednesday to deal with a domestic disturbance, police said. Officers found out the argument between the two escalated when Ramirez grabbed a knife and stabbed her boyfriend in the chest, Sgt. Bryan Glass said.

Ramirez remains in custody and has a pre-trial Tuesday. Her boyfriend went to Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian with non-life threatening injuries.
