Westmont 3, Vanguard 2
COSTA MESA — The third-seeded Lions nearly overcame a 3-0 deficit, but were upset by the sixth-seeded Warriors in the first round of the Golden State Athletic Conference Tournament Wednesday.
Westmont (8-6-2), which was sixth in the GSAC at 4-4-2, scored all of its goals in the first half.
Vanguard’s Tom Culver scored two goals, both coming on penalty kicks. He netted his first goal in the 59th minute and his scond in the 67th.
Goalie Trevor Herrera, who had three saves, left the net in the final minute to try to help the Lions (9-5-2) score, but they came up empty. Vanguard, ranked No. 20 in the NAIA, finished third in the GSAC at 7-2-1. The Lions defeated the Warriors during the regular season, scoring a 2-1 victory in overtime at Westmont Sept. 27.
Anthony Niboli, Jonathon Schoff and Hugo Pizano scored a goal each for Westmont, while Saul Moreno added an assist. The Warriors play at No. 2-seeded Concordia on Saturday.

Orange Coast def. Cypress
COSTA MESA — Freshman middle blocker Briana Fields finished with 20 kills to lead the Pirates to a 13-25, 25-20, 25-20, 20-25, 15-3 Orange Empire Conference victory Wednesday night.
OCC (15-3, 7-3 in conference) remained in third place in conference by opening Game 5 with 11 straight points.
Rachel Freeno contributed 14 kills and 21 digs and Amanda Cheseborough finished with 23 digs.
Emily Lyon had 53 assists for the Pirates.
OCC plays at Irvine Valley Friday at 5 p.m.
