WALNUT — The Corona del Mar High girls won the Division III title and finished with the best team time of the day Friday at Mt. SAC.
CdM junior Melanie Powers won in 18 minutes, 35 seconds over the three-mile course. Senior Laura Bilder came in second in 18:53 and senior Kim Condino took fourth in 19:13. Freshman Kristen Rivera came in sixth in 19:40 and junior Marrisa Cummings finished eighth in 19:44 to help CdM score 21 points and win the division championship.
Junior Allison Garrett (14th in 20:09) and junior Amanda Garrett (19th, 20:19) also competed for the Sea Kings.
The CdM girls earned a team time of 96:04, Coach Bill Sumer said, 2:34 faster than Foothill, which won the Division III sweepstakes championship.
“I’m a little surprised by that finish because we really didn’t attack it; we just ran an average race,” Sumner said. “We have a cluster league meet, league finals, CIF finals and state, so it doesn’t’ make sense to go fast. So, I’m a little surprised. I’m pleased.”
The CdM boys finished second in Division III to Ganesha, scoring 95 to the winners’ 82.
Senior Matthew Haug led the Sea Kings with a seventh-place finish in 16:52. Junior Sebastien Welch came in 10th in 17:06. Sophomore Austin Barvin was 14th, finishing in 17:16. Senior Blaine Bolus followed in 31st in 17:54 and junior Julien Crockett was 35th in 18:05.
