SANTA BARBARA — Shardai Sublett recorded 16 kills to lead the No. 12-ranked Lions to a 15-25, 25-15, 23-25, 25-22, 15-11 Golden State Athletic Conference victory Saturday.

Heather DeJongh had 13 kills and 17 digs, while Kelsey Writ added nine kills and 11 digs for Vanguard (12-5, 7-5 in conference). DeJohng and Jessica Roy had three aces each. Meghan Walsh amassed 48 assists.

Westmont, which is not ranked in the NAIA, dropped to 9-14, 3-9.

SAN LUIS OBISPO — The Anteaters’ Devon Sutherlan posted a season-high 26 digs against the Mustangs, who won the Big West Conference match, 25-21, 20-25, 25-23, 25-15, Saturday night.

Lauren Kellerman recorded a double-double with 19 kills and 13 digs, while Kari Pestolesi added 15 kils and 12 digs for UCI (9-3, 4-3 in conference). Alexandra Filkins matched a career-high with 11 kills while adding eight digs and setter Taryn Robertson finished with 46 assists and eight digs for the Anteaters.

Cal Poly improved to 11-7, 6-1.

Pre-National Meet

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. — The UC Irvine women’s cross country team finished 17th and the men’s squad 34th Saturday.

Florida State and Princeton tied for first in the women’s competition with 89 points each, Michigan was third with 168 and UCI 17th with 505 points in the 39-team race.

Susan Kuijken of Florida State was the individual winner with a time of 19 minutes, 48.2 seconds over 6,000 meters at the Lavern Gibson Course at the Wabash Family Sports Center.

UCI senior Laura Olvera was 26th in 20:59.2 in the 281-runner field.

Candice Chavez was 58th (21:29.0), Gabriela Santana 127th (22:07.7), Samantha Costantini 143rd (22:16.2), Lauren Chramosta 158th (22:23.1), Emily Romo 215th (23:06.1) and Kendall Bruton 220th (23:10.4).

Alabama was first of 41 teams in the men’s competition with 89 points, Northern Arizona placed second with 113 and Michigan third with 146. UCI totaled 800 points for 34th place.

Tyson David of Alabama was the individual champion with an 8,000-meter time of 23:30.1.

UCI’s Nick Mosey finished 76th of 276 runners with a time of 24:43.5, Colin Hacker was 122nd (25:05.6) and Rex Nelson 158th (25:22.4).

Rusty Whisman placed 195th in 25:41.5, Danny Kalinowski was 249th (26:20.1), Nick Osborne 257th (26:38.4) and Chris Proffitt 258th (26:42.5).

SANTA BARBARA — Griffin Lerman scored a career-high five goals for the No. 9-ranked Anteaters, who lost the nonconference game after Daniel Natalizio scored the sudden-death goal 2 minutes, 33 seconds into the third overtime Saturday.

Max Parrague and Greg Enloe scored two goals each, while goalie Matt Johnson recorded a career-high 14 saves each for UCI (6-8). Goalie Michael Robinson, a Newport Harbor High product, had 14 saves for the No. 8-ranked Gauchos (11-7), who were led by Milos Golic’s four goals

UCSB’s Sean Castillo scored his lone goal of the contest with 13 seconds left to tie the game at 10-10 and send the teams into overtime.

Golic scored an extra-man goal with 51 seconds left in the first of two regular-overtime periods to give the Gauchos an 11-10 lead.

An extra-man goal by Enloe with 2:46 remaining in the second overtime period drew UCI even at 11-11 before Partelow countered with a power-play goal at 1:11 to put the Gauchos back ahead at 12-11. Lerman tied the game for UCI with 49 ticks left, setting up Natalizio’s game-winning goal in the sudden-victory period.

UCI plays host to Brown University today in a nonconference game at 3 p.m.
