Timmy Reyes of Huntington Beach saw his bid for an Assn. of Surfing Professionals event title come to an end in the third round of the Billabong Pro Mundaka on Friday in Spain.
Reyes placed second to Joel Parkinson of Australia in a men’s Round 1 heat, then went on to defeat Rodrigo Dornelles of Brazil in a two-man Round 2 heat. In the next round, he was eliminated by another Australian, Tom Whitaker, who went on to advance another round before being eliminated in the quarterfinals.
Also Friday, Kelly Slater (Cocoa Beach, Fla.), who entered the event as the ASP ratings leader, clinched an unprecedented ninth ASP world title when he defeated event wild-card Eneko Acero of Spain during Round 3 of the competition.
The Billabong Pro Mundaka was the ninth of 11 stops on the 2008 ASP Men’s World Tour.
