A memorial service for Craig Fertig, a former USC quarterback, assistant coach and administrator who coached the Estancia High football team in 2003 and 2004, is scheduled Monday at 2 p.m. at USC’s Galen Center.
Fertig, who lived in Newport Beach, died Saturday of kidney failure. He was 66.
Estancia was 7-13 in his two seasons at the helm.
Fertig, involved with USC football for nearly 50 years, is perhaps best known for throwing a touchdown pass to Rod Sherman to cap a late rally in the Trojans’ 1964 victory over then-top-ranked Notre Dame.
He was an assistant coach under John McKay from 1965 to 1973 and he was head coach for four seasons at Oregon State, beginning in 1976.
He was an assistant athletic director for development at UC Irvine in 1989 and became a broadcaster in 1992, working for nearly a decade on USC football telecasts.
The Craig Fertig Memorial Scholarship Fund has been established by the USC Athletic Department. Donations may be sent to Ron Orr, USC Athletic Department, Heritage Hall, 2003, Los Angeles, CA 90089-0602.
