HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP:

LOS ALAMITOS — Dan Glenn left Tuesday night’s thriller with some optimism for the future, yet with a taste of disappointment. There was regret after he saw Los Alamitos High beat his Newport Harbor girls’ volleyball team, 25-23, 27-25, 25-27, 21-25, 15-13, in a key Sunset League match Tuesday night.

Junior Katey Thompson had 10 kills to lead the Sailors, ranked No. 5 in CIF Southern Section Division I-AA. Los Al entered ranked No. 3.

Senior Mary Buckingham and sophomore Maddie Brown had six kills each, while senior Arielle Lysacek contributed 16 assists and eight kills.

Junior Kelly Heenan had 12 digs and senior Jen Palmquist had six kills and four blocks. Freshman Cinnamon Sary did a bit of everything for the Sailors, compiling 19 assists and eight digs and four aces.

“It just hurts in the sense that we were up in the first and second games,” Glenn said. “We definitely had our opportunities. I thought we outplayed them but we didn’t outplay them in crunchtime. But all the things we didn’t do I think we can improve on.”
