SchoolPowerPalooza event will be Sept. 27
SchoolPower is inviting everyone in Laguna Beach to kick off the school year at its first-ever family barbecue and concert. “SchoolPowerPalooza,” Saturday, Sept. 27 from 4 to 7 p.m. at El Morro Elementary School.
The event will feature the music of Jason Feddy, Party Foul and Common Sense, as well as dinner with friends, family, teachers and administrators.
SchoolPower is the local nonprofit group that raises money for Laguna Beach schools.
“SchoolPower is reaching out to involve the whole community to let people know that they play the starring role in the success of our kids’ education,” said President Jeff Spurlock. “Parents, teachers, administrators, the students “” everyone is a key player here and everyone can get involved in making Laguna Beach schools the best they can be.”
Kristin Winter, chair of SchoolPowerPalooza, thought the group should throw an event that would appeal to all ages.
“We needed a fun, casual back-to-school event where you can bring the whole family,” she said. “There will be great bands, good food, the kids can see their teachers, you can hang out with friends. It’s a perfect event for a town like Laguna.”
The low ticket prices and outreach to Laguna Beach families and businesses are intended to bring more awareness about the educational foundation.
In addition, the event is designed to attract those who may not normally be able to attend a weekday evening event due to child care or work schedules.
Attendants will direct cars to complimentary parking at the Crystal Cove State Park lots (first to the lot directly behind El Morro, and then to the Los Trancos location on Coast Highway). Frequent and free shuttle service will be provided.
To be as inclusive as possible, SchoolPower has set ticket prices to cover only the cost of the event.
Tickets purchased by September 19 will be $12 per child and $17 per adult.
At the door, tickets will be $15 and $20 respectively.

Traffic at Top of the World addressed
Laguna Beach Police are working with Top of the World Elementary School to reduce traffic impacts, particularly at the start of the school year, City Manager Ken Frank stated in his Sept. 5 weekly update to city staff.
Two traffic speed trailers have been deployed on the streets around the school.
A message board has also been set up. In addition, a police officer and a parking services officer will be staged on Mountain View and at the school parking lot in the morning, Frank said.
