Nick’s expects Monday opening

Nick’s Laguna Beach is expected to open its doors Monday after extensive renovations that took four months to complete, said spokesman Brian Harrington.

The indoor-outdoor restaurant will open at 11 a.m. for lunch and will serve dinner until 11 p.m. Sunday through Thursday, with a 1 a.m. closing Friday and Saturday.

The restaurant will open for breakfast later in the month.

Nick’s will serve classic American foods, including steak, chicken and fish, and will have its own Nick’s Honey Blonde beer on tap, among other draft and bottle beers. Wine and unique cocktails will be featured.

Mayer to chair Urban Land Institute council

Jeff Mayer, principal at McLarand, Vasquez, Emsiek & Partners, has been appointed as chairman of the Urban Land Institute’s Orange County District Council. The Orange County District Council is one of the largest ULI District Councils in the world.

Mayer, a Laguna Beach resident, replaces Joan Gladstone, also of Laguna Beach.

Mayer has 30 years of experience in development, including commercial, residential, mixed-use, resort and entertainment.

An active member in the Urban Land Institute since 1989, Mayer served for two years as assistant chairman of ULI Orange County.

Mayer’s design projects include the NIKKEN World Headquarters in Irvine; Olympic Spirit Visitors Center in Toronto, Canada; Costa Isabela Resort in Herraduras, Puerto Rico; and Theme Park Master Planning and Attraction Development for Paramount Studios in Tianjin, China.

The Urban Land Institute is a nonprofit education and research institute. Its mission is to provide leadership in the responsible use of land.

Dementia clinician to address business club

Dr. Claudia H. Kawas will discuss “Brain Aging and Dementia” at a meeting of the Coastal Business Exchange (CBX) at 7:15 a.m. Wednesday at the Hotel Laguna.

Kawas is a clinician and researcher in the areas of aging and dementia, concentrating on the epidemiology of aging and Alzheimer’s disease. Most recently, she has led studies in cognitive and functional abilities of the “oldest old” (those older than 90).

R and R seminar begins Wednesday

Marie Moran, a Laguna Beach resident, will present a career and personal discovery workshop series designed to provide direction for individuals considering major life or career transitions. The six-week Wednesday evening class begins Wednesday in Laguna Beach.
