BYC Governor’s Cup, 3rd Day
The final round of the original round robin series was finished at the beginning of the day.
The top two teams, including defending champion Newport Harbor Yacht Club, which is undefeated and Cruising Yacht Club of Australia, with a loss only to NHYC, were excused. They were able to watch the rest of the day’s competition. Both teams stayed for a while, returning to the dock after most of the rest of the matches were completed. NHYC will have the right to choose between the second, third and fourth place teams for their first match in the Semi-Finals to be held on Sunday.
The teams which placed third through sixth competed in spirited matches, ending with Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron, with Bradley Farrand at the helm, placing third, Royal Yachting Association, skipper Andrew Shaw in fourth. In fifth place and so out of the Semi-Finals were St Thomas Yacht Club, Taylor Canfield, helmsman, and, in sixth, Southern Yacht Club, with Patrick Ryan at the helm.
The seven through twelve placing teams competed in another round robin, which was incomplete at the end of the day as the winds died, so each team will have two more matches to complete on Sunday, then they will be able to stay to watch the Semi-Finals, the Petit Finals between the third and fourth place teams and the Finals between the top two teams.
The overcast persisted the whole day, with light southwest winds up to 10 mph. The people on the many spectator and support boats were able to watch the starts of the South Shore Yacht Club’s Annual Crew of Two Around Catalina Regatta. A variety of large boats started nearby the Gov Cup Race Course near the Newport Pier - a dramatic sight.
The event is sponsored by The Yacht Barn, builder of the Gov Cup 21’s, The Newport Balboa Sailing and Seamanship Foundation, Tommy Bahamas Island Grille, CR&R; Recycling and Waste Services, Taco Bell, West Marine, Niagara, Island Marine Fuel, Hurley and Barnacle Bills Underwater Yacht Maintenance.
