UCI brought in a record $327 million in federal, state and private grants in 2007-08, a 19% increase over last year’s sum and a 5% increase over the previous record, officials announced this week.
The university saw the most dollars — at $201 million — come from federal grants; but the real surprise was the 818% increase in state funding, which rose to $53 million after the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine donated $27 million last year to construct a stem cell research facility.
The School of Medicine received the most grant money, with $92.7 million, while the School of Humanities had the biggest increase with a 77% jump in funding from the previous year.
“Campus leadership has been very good at fostering emerging avenues of research and education,” Vice Chancellor for Research Susan V. Bryant said.
