The Lunch Tables recently beat the Twins in the eighth annual Corona del Mar Whiffle Ball tournament championship game, 15-10.5.
Players for the winning Lunch Tables included Dan Grable, James May, Gary Maithison, Peter Selby, Kim Rapp and tournament director Gary Almquist.
The Twins, so-named because the team included three sets of twins, consisted of Hunter and Hayley Alder, Cory and Kirk MacDonald, and Erik and Kevin Rask.
The 32-team tournament consisted of junior high and high school teams, and raised money for the CdM wrestling program, which Almquist coaches. Andrew Halladay was also awarded a $1,000 scholarship.
Hayley Alder was named “whiffle ball queen,” and Michael Bloom had the highest home run-hitting percentage of .480.
James May of the Lunch Tables also collected his 100th career hit in the tournament, so Almquist stopped the game and gave him the game ball.
“Out of the 700 or 800 people who have batted in the tournament, only 15 have ever gotten 100 hits,” Almquist said.
The CdM whiffle ball all-stars, which consisted of Erik Rask, Kevin Rask, Steve Manning, John Doering, Andy Rovzar and Hunter Alder, also played against the Mariners Church pastor staff headed by Jeff Pries. The CdM all-stars were victorious, 18.5-15.
