Sailors’ Messersmith first-team All-Sunset
Newport Harbor High senior Jane Messersmith was recently named first-team All-Sunset League for softball.
Sailors teammate Alex Bauer, a freshman, earned second-team honors.
The Bucknell-bound Messersmith, who played pitcher and shortstop, earned her second straight first-team selection after batting a team-best .580 for Newport Harbor.
She had five home runs, 24 RBIs and scored 26 runs, also all team-highs. Messersmith also swiped a team-high 10 bases and played in all 23 games.
On the mound, she was 4-8 with a 4.30 earned-run average. Messersmith struck out 89 in 66 2/3 innings.
Bauer, who played first base and pitched, batted .167. Her three doubles tied her for second on the team. Defensively, she made just six errors all season and had a .935 fielding percentage.
Newport Harbor finished 7-16, 0-10 in league.
Edison’s Rachel Miller was named league MVP.
