A Costa Mesa man was killed when he was hit by a car on Interstate 10 in Ontario, the San Bernardino County coroner said Thursday.

Chuck Gordillo, 50, was towing a car on his eastbound trailer on the 10 freeway in Ontario Wednesday when the hood of the car he was towing flew off and landed on the right shoulder, the coroner report said.

Gordillo pulled over just west of Haven Avenue and went to get the car hood when a vehicle avoiding stopped traffic swerved into the shoulder lane and hit him, police said.

When paramedics arrived to the scene, it was too late. Gordillo was pronounced dead at the scene, coroner officials said.

California Highway Patrol officials are investigating.
