CIF SOUTHERN SECTION TRACK AND FIELD DIVISIONAL FINALS:

Sophomore Tatiania Williams is Costa Mesa High’s lone representative at today’s CIF Southern Section Divisional Finals at Mt. San Antonio College.
Williams advanced last week with a recordbreaking performance. Her goal of reaching the CIF Southern Section Masters Meet, just as the quest of 21 other locals, continues today.
Williams qualified fourth in the CIF Southern Section Division III preliminaries going 35 feet, nine inches in the triple jump. She broke the school record held by Danielle Morton, who set it last season with a jump of 35-2.
Newport Harbor’s Rex Nelson will be competing in the 1,600 and 3,200 meters after qualifying first in both events at the Division II preliminaries.
Going forward, it’s less likely that Nelson would compete in both events at the Masters meet if he qualifies in both, but that call is still pending.
He’d have to qualify in both, and that would be a pretty tall order since it’s going to be 95 degrees [today], but we’ll see.”
Cecil Whiteside, who finished third in the discus throw at the Arcadia Invitational earlier this season, qualified fifth in the boys’ shot put (55 feet, 4 inches) in Moorpark last week. He qualified seventh in the discus (160-3), while senior teammate Nate Talbot qualified fourth in the discus (163-4).
Repeating as the CIF Division III champions will be a tall order for the Corona del Mar High girls’ team, something Coach Bill Sumner readily admits.
The Sea Kings finished fourth at Arcadia in the distance medley, one of the team’s trademark best events. They’d finished fourth at the prestigious meet for the previous four years. CdM is led by senior Shelby Buckley, and Allison Damon is finally coming back into her own after spending most of the season hampered by mononucleosis.
