Assn. of Volleyball Professional Tour stars and Olympic gold medalists Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh announced Tuesday that they will miss the tournament taking place this weekend in Charleston, S.C., at the Family Circle Tennis Center.
The top-seeded team has elected to sit out of the tournament to allow Walsh time to rest her shoulder. Walsh, who had surgery on her right shoulder in November, suffered a minor setback in her recovery last weekend while competing in Huntington Beachf.
Walsh and May-Treanor still managed to take home their third-straight AVP Crocs Tour tournament title, sweeping the Cuervo Gold Crown Series. It was the fifth straight time the duo won in Huntington Beach.
May-Treanor and Walsh captured gold in the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens and are favorites to repeat the feat in Beijing this summer. Walsh said Sunday that she doesn’t feel that this will affect her performance and the team’s Olympic run.
May-Treanor, the Newport Harbor High product, still plans to travel to Charleston to watch the tournament and will take time Saturday to participate in a meet and greet with fans.
