The public is invited to join religious, business, community and civic leaders in the 11th annual National Day of Prayer Breakfast on May 1 at the Balboa Bay Club, sponsored by the Newport Mesa Irvine Interfaith Council. Keynote speaker David Fox of The Immortal Chaplains Foundation will present the inspiring story of the four chaplains who gave their life jackets to others on the Dorchester as the ship was sunk at sea during WWII.
David Fox, a nephew of one of the chaplains, will tell the inspiring interfaith story of the four “Immortal Chaplains,” whose great example of love for others — without regard to race, religion or creed — acknowledges the potential for human compassion. These four chaplains, from different faiths, Jewish, Roman Catholic, and Protestant, worked together during World War II — a time when interfaith interaction was uncommon — and made the ultimate sacrifice for the soldiers they served. They were seen standing together on the hull of the ship with arms joined in prayer as it went down on Feb. 3, 1943.
The program will feature honored representatives from government and the Interfaith Community, notes Council President Dennis Short of Harbor Christian Church. The breakfast begins 7 a.m. at the Balboa Bay Club, 1221 W. Coast Hwy., Newport Beach. The cost is $35 per person. The fee for a table of 10 is $350. Reservations, required by April 28, can be made by calling (714) 921-8665. More information is available at www.nmiinterfaith.org
LIONS HELPING OUR COMMUNITY
Harbor Mesa Lions President Gina Stansbury presented donations to representatives of numerous community organizations at the club’s annual “Allocations Night,” which brought the total of the club’s donations this year to more than $16,000. Angels Charities, Blind Children Learning Center, Boys & Girls Club, Families Costa Mesa, Orange Coast Interfaith Shelter, Share Our Selves, Foundation Fighting Blindness, and Someone Cares Soup Kitchen are among the charities benefited.
The money is raised by the club each year with several fundraisers such as: Casino Night, Spaghetti Splash Dinner, Lucy & Ethyl’s Bingo Night and an annual garage sale. Harbor Mesa Lions also do projects that help students and various city events. For more information about the club, call (714) 898-1897.
