Vanguard University’s upset victory over the then-No. 5-ranked Concordia men’s basketball team surely gave the Lions a boost and also resulted in a Golden State Athletic Conference honor for their leading scorer.
Sophomore Dennis Heenan, a Newport Harbor High product, has been named GSAC Player of the Week. He scored 13 points and four rebounds in Vanguard’s 91-86 overtime win at Concordia Feb. 13. The 6-foot-6 guard also tallied 21 points and six rebounds Saturday, when the Lions beat Westmont, 77-64, at the Pit.
For the week, Heenan shot 11 for 18 (61%) from the field, including six for 11 from three-point range, and was six of eight at the free-throw line.
Heenan leads the Lions in scoring (11.8 points) and rebounding (5.5) averages, as well as in three-pointers (59).
Vanguard plays at Chapman in a nonconference game tonight at 7.
