Mesa hangs tough for one quarter

SANTA BARBARA — The Costa Mesa High girls’ water polo team ended its season after a 13-3 loss to Santa Barbara in the first round of the CIF Southern Section Division II playoffs Thursday at Santa Barbara High.

Seniors Patricia Marty and Talhia Nuñez, as well as junior Ashley Rendon, all scored for the Mustangs.

Sophomore Danielle Bowen made five saves against the No. 3-seeded Dons for Costa Mesa, which ends its season with a record of 12-17.

“I thought we played a really good first half defensively, to hold them to six goals,” Costa Mesa Coach Tim Postiff said. “We just didn’t execute offensively at all. We only had five shots in the first half, and we were in foul trouble.”
