Orchid event blooms

The annual Fascination of Orchids Show at the Orange County Fairgrounds and Exposition Center this weekend could be more aptly named the Complete and Utter Obsession with Orchids Show.

This becomes clear upon walking through the entrance of the main tent.

There, on the right-hand side, are small, rare Japanese orchids admired for the complex designs on their leaves, selling for $1,000.

Even though the show features some of the most expensive and sought-after orchids in the world, it is not just for orchid enthusiasts, said Tony Glinskas, the show chairman.

“We have something here for everyone from neophytes to experts looking for $5,000 plants,” Glinskas said.

“We’re really trying to reach out to the Orange County community and show them that anyone can grow an orchid,” he said.

In fact, some of the most stunning and intricate-looking orchids can be purchased for $20 or less and can live comfortably on a coffee table or a windowsill with minimal watering, according to Norman Fang, owner of Orchids.comand one of the preeminent orchid salesmen in the world.

“All you have to do to raise a phalaenopsis,” he said, pointing to a gorgeous, bright purple flower, “is mix our nutrient powder with warm water and pour it over the roots twice a month.”

Still, skeptics who doubt the power of their green thumb can attend talks and get tips from friendly experts.

There’s a class at 3 p.m. today and Saturday when participants pot their own orchids and take them home.
