OCC’s model U.N. receives awards

OCC’s campus Model United Nations club recently won awards at a prestigious collegiate conference hosted by UCLA.

Student Sunny Sidhu took an Outstanding Delegate citation, and students Sam Flora and Jonathan Juanpradub took Commendation citations amid a field of delegates that included top state schools such as Stanford, UC Berkeley and UC San Diego.

During the Jan. 18-20 conference, students got the chance to participate in mock debates on current international issues including the denuclearization of North Korea, the AIDS epidemic in Africa, the crisis in Darfur and the war in Iraq.

The debates attempt to simulate the format of authentic United Nations debates where students voice opinions, write resolutions and vote on them.

Students interested in joining the club can find the Coast Model UN table at Club Rush Feb. 12 in the OCC Quad.
