Virginia Louise Herberts

Virginia Louise Herberts of Newport Beach, born January 14, 1928, passed away quietly and comfortably surrounded by her family on January 29, 2008, two weeks after celebrating her 80th birthday with her husband, children and grandchildren. A devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother, she is survived by Curtis Herberts, her loving husband of nearly 62 years, their three children, Carol Westling, Kathy Schuler and Curt Herberts, ll, their spouses, grandchildren, great grandchildren and many loving friends. She loved birds, trees and nature and was dedicated to preserving and enhancing the natural beauty of Newport Beach. For many years she served as a Commissioner on the City of Newport Beach Parks, Beaches and Recreation Commission. She was the Founder and first Chairman of the Tree Subcommittee on the Commission and worked passionately and tirelessly to preserve the trees in our city. She was very inspirational on the Commission and responsible for having Newport Beach designated as a Tree City USA. She was honored by SPON with the Frank and Frances Robinson Environmental Award for her “Urban Forest Preservation.” In commemoration to her service, a Golden Lantern Tree and plaque are located at Gateway Park at the entrance to Balboa Peninsula. She was involved in many other community activities as well, including her long time support of the Philharmonic Society of Orange County. There will be a private family memorial. She will be missed greatly by her family and friends.
