Three more names of local Marines who paid the ultimate price have been set in stone, as Huntington Beach honors its veterans killed in action. Their names will be officially unveiled Monday.
City, state, federal and military officials are scheduled to come together to rededicate the Veterans’ Memorial Monument at City Hall, in honor of adding the names of three Marines killed in action in Iraq over the past few years.
As all three being remembered are Marines, the military branch will take an active role in the event, with Chief Warrant Officer Victor Ojeda serving as the master of ceremonies, and Marines giving a rifle salute, playing taps and bagpipes.
Those memorialized are: Sgt. William James, who was 24, killed by a gunshot wound in the Al Anbar province of Iraq in November 2004; Lance Cpl. Marcus Glimpse, 22 at the time, killed by an improvised explosive device during combat operations April 2006 in Khandari, part of the Al Anbar province; and Lance Cpl. Nathan Windsor, killed March 2007 in Al Taqaddum, part of the Al Anbar province. All were or had been residents of Huntington Beach.
Though not organized by the American Legion as most such ceremonies are in Huntington Beach, members are expected to turn out in force for the event, local post 133 Commander Bob Davis said.
“It has our full support and we will be there Monday evening,” he said. “We are in favor of everything they’re doing.”
Putting the names up permanently is a way to keep those who served from being forgotten, Davis said.
“It’s about remembrance,” he said. “They tend to fade away in history, but then when you look at the monument, their names come back to you.”
The rededication takes place 4 p.m. Monday at the Civic Center, 2000 Main St.
