NEWPORT BEACH — Senior Colin McKibbin scored two dramatic goals to lead the Newport Harbor High boys’ water polo team to a victory in a marathon game against Northwood Tuesday.
McKibbin scored with a second left in regulation to tie the score, then added the game-winning goal 1:54 into the second sudden-death overtime of the Sailors’ 8-7 nonleague victory at Newport Harbor High.
Newport Harbor (14-2), the top-ranked team in the CIF Southern Section Division I coaches’ poll, had to come back after Travis Noll’s penalty shot with nine seconds left in regulation gave Northwood (6-7), ranked No. 4 in Division I, a 6-5 lead.
Clinton Jorth had team-highs of three goals and six steals for Newport Harbor, which got the win in the eighth period of the game. The Tars also got two goals from Brandon Parole and a goal and four steals from Andy Hayes.
Myles Christian made nine saves in goal and added three steals.
Coach Jason Lynch’s Newport Harbor squad plays host to Fountain Valley today at 5 p.m. in a Sunset League game.
