Oilers win third game

The Huntington Beach Oilers picked up their third win in four Jr. Pee Wee Division outings by edging the Bellflower Broncos, 21-18, in Jr. All-American Football action Saturday.

The Oilers (3-1) fell behind early 6-0, but Maurice Barber led a score-tying drive that he capped with a touchdown run.

Barber then put Huntington ahead when he scored on a 45-yard run on the Oilers’ next possession.

Huntington’s final score came on Scottie Phillips’ interception return in the fourth quarter.

The Oilers’ fourth quarter defense led by Phillips, Barber, Tristan Wenschlag, Nolan Winks, Skyler Pavloff, Daniel Armando, Ryan Burke, Gavin Ryan-Massa, Josh Marks, Dylan Zeglovitch, Trevor Diehl and Nick Howard, shut down the Broncos.

Zeglovitch and Barber each had first-quarter interceptions, with Barber’s foiling a conversion pass by the Broncos.

Howard kicked a two-point conversion.

Huntington hosts the Rowland Heights Raiders at 1 p.m. Saturday at Huntington Beach High.

Clinic Division

Carson 24, Huntington 6

Huntington bolted to an early 6-0 lead when running back Brae Ivey ran for a touchdown on the first offensive play from scrimmage but from there on, it was all Carson as the Colts defense stymied the Black Oilers.

Oilers Dylan Izykowski, Caleb Heartsill, Lance Cervantes and co-captain Ricky Brady made key tackles on defense.

Huntington plays a 9 a.m. game Saturday against the Mission Viejo Cowboys at Mission Viejo High.

Jr. Clinic Division

Huntington 26, Garden Grove 6

Anthony DeLaTorre rushed for two touchdowns and Steele Dubar scored his second TD of the season as the Black Oilers cruised past the host Falcons.

DeLaTorre also recovered an onside kick. Joshua Crooks scored a rushing PAT and also forced a fumble, and Jackson McCleery ran for both a touchdown and point-after.

McCleery and Jeremy Romash led a Black Oilers defense that didn’t allow any other points after Garden Grove scored on its opening drive. Also making key contributions on defense were Nick Welch who had a touchdown-saving tackle, Jacob Florez, Bryce Klett and Evan Smith.

Huntington will play its first home game of the season at 11 a.m. Saturday by hosting the Rowland Heights Raiders at Huntington Beach High.

Future League

Mission Viejo 21, Huntington 20

Cameron Herrington, Samuel Rovano, Seth Wilson and Mason Brady played solid games for Huntington, which suffered its first loss of the season.
