Man arrested after standoff

Jeffrey Patrick Haley yelled out, “No worries, it’s all right,” to his son who waited in a neighbor’s front yard as two Costa Mesa officers escorted him out of his home Sunday evening.
For the past two hours, Haley, 36, had been holed up in his home in the 2100 block of Thurin Avenue in Costa Mesa, while SWAT officers and negotiators waited outside for the man to come out.
Police received a call at 3:34 p.m. that a fight between a boyfriend and girlfriend had escalated, and that the man was holding a loaded handgun, police said. Several units arrived before 4 p.m. and the department’s SWAT team quickly geared up. Officers secured the neighborhood around the home and attempted to clear the surrounding area, although the sidewalks soon filled with onlookers.
Haley’s girlfriend was let free from the home just before police went in to get him.
Neighbors said they were not surprised to see hordes of police surrounding their neighborhood, as raids have been seen nearby in the past.
While police set up a command post on Thurin Avenue, residents on the other side of the condo walked out of the front homes to be greeted by a cadre of armed Costa Mesa police officers.
“I was inside watching movies when they first got here,” said David Frampton, 21. “I walked out the front door and there was four guys with shotguns.”
Soon after his girlfriend was able to leave the home, Haley was arrested on suspicion of being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm and battery on a cohabitant.
He was booked at Costa Mesa City Jail on $50,000 bail and is scheduled to appear in court this morning to face the charges at the Harbor Justice Center in Newport Beach, police said.
Haley has multiple cases in Orange County courts for traffic violations.
Most recently, in February he pleaded not guilty to speeding and driving on a suspended license, according to the Orange County Superior Court’s website.
