Pirates picked third in preseason division poll

The Orange Coast College football program, which has played in bowl games the last two seasons, has been picked to finish third in the six-team Mission Conference American Division in a preseason media poll conducted Thursday.

Coach Mike Taylor’s Pirates, who open the season Sept. 1 at Citrus College, received 55 points, one shy of Palomar.

El Camino, ranked No. 1 in the nation this year by JCGridiron.com and the defending state champion, was the unanimous choice to win the American Division.

Fullerton (46), Long Beach (39) and Golden West (14) rounded out the American Division poll.

Saddleback is the favorite to win the National Division (77 points), followed by Mt. SAC (72), Santa Ana (49), Riverside (34), Pasadena and Cerritos (31 each).

OCC plays all five American Division rivals and will also meet National Division representatives Mt. SAC, Santa Ana and Pasadena in its 10-game regular season.
