BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:Rodgers to make appearance at training

Running legend Bill Rodgers will make an appearance at the first day of training for the Avia Orange County Marathon, Saturday at the Corona del Mar High track.

Rodgers, who won both the New York City Marathon and the Boston Marathon four times each between 1975-80, will participate in a seminar starting at 8 a.m. He will be joined by CdM Coach Bill Sumner. Sumner is the executive race director for the Orange County Marathon.

Rodgers, who won 21 marathons in his career, is a member of the National Track & Field Hall of Fame.

The training program for the Orange County Marathon, which was developed by Sumner’s Cal Coast Track Club, is designed to help runners of all levels prepare for the fourth-annual Orange County Marathon. The marathon is scheduled for Jan. 6, 2008.

Marathon training is $99 when registering online at ocmarathon.com by Thursday at midnight, and $110 after. It also includes a race hat, a one-year membership to Cal Coast Track Club and a T-shirt.

Registration for the first day of training will take place Saturday from 7-8 a.m., followed by a presentation from Rodgers and Sumner and then a two-mile time trial run.
