Slammers in Gothic final

GOTHENBERG, Sweden — The Slammers Futbol Club’s girls’ 14-and-under team is playing in the championship match of the Gothia Cup in Sweden today.

Scarlett Fallon, Tessa Andujar, Jordan Dillion and Lindsey Luke are on the club team that’s based out of Newport Beach, the city the quartet is from. The four girls will also all be freshmen at Corona del Mar High in the fall.

They’ve been a part of some dominance while at the Gothia Cup. On Friday, they reeled off 2-0 and 7-1 wins, before taking out a club team from San Diego, 3-0, to reach today’s final against a squad from Louisiana.

Luke, a goalkeeper, has been a big part of the Slammers’ six shutouts in eight games. The Slammers have outscored opponents, 37-2, in the prestigious tournament that started on Monday.

The Gothia Cup is likened to the World Cup on a youth soccer level, with 65 countries competing.

After the tournament ends, the girls are going to the U.S. Youth Soccer National Championships in Frisco, Texas. That tournament is Wednesday through July 29.
