UCI raises $276 million in funds, contracts

UC Irvine raised $276 million in contract and grant funding during the 2006-07 school year, below its total from a year ago but still marking the second-highest amount in the university’s history.

Last year, with the aid of a $19.7-million gift from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, UCI garnered a record $310 million. Administrators said the total was lower this year due to the rarity of the gift and because most of the $17 million for stem cell research has yet to arrive.

Among UCI’s donations this year were $36 million from private foundations, $20.6 million in industry awards and $13 million through the UC Discovery grant program.
