RYAN SECOND IN PIER RACE

Keith Ryan of UC Irvine placed second in the men’s race at the 32nd annual Newport Pier to Pier Swim, where 286 swimmers from the western United States and Canada competed in the two-mile race between the Balboa Pier and Newport Pier on July 7.

Ryan finished in 43 minutes, 21 seconds behind Craig Nadel (43:06). Andy Fujimoto of UCI finished 18th in 46:22.

In the women’s race, Laurie Dodd won (46:03). Monica Fox of UC Irvine placed eighth (50:32).

Ernie Polte, an 80-year-old and a former Fullerton College swim coach, was the oldest to complete the event, at 259th in 1 hour, 25 minutes, 22 seconds.
