Environmental Nature Center to go green
The Environmental Nature Center in Newport Beach plans to break ground Tuesday on its new educational facility, a sustainable structure that center officials estimate will save them $20,000 every year.
The nonprofit nature center serves more than 15,000 students every year and houses 14 native Southern California plant communities in its on-site gardens.
The new structure, designed by the architectural firm LPA, Inc., will feature solar panels, on-site storm water treatment, drought tolerant landscaping and walls and flooring made from recycled materials.
The groundbreaking will take place Tuesday at 5 p.m. at the center, at 1601 E. 16th St. in Newport Beach. There will be a complimentary dinner afterward at 6 p.m. and an awards ceremony at 7 p.m.
