Teen found unresponsive on Corona del Mar rocks

A 14-year-old girl found lying on the rocks off of Corona del Mar State Beach Wednesday morning was taken to the hospital after police found her to be unresponsive and barely conscious, authorities said Thursday.

The Irvine resident was reportedly with a running group along the rocks behind Ocean and Poppy avenues when she tripped or fell, Battalion Chief Paul Matheis said.

She had no cuts or major bruising but seemed to be wincing, Newport Beach Police Lt. Dale Johnson said. The officer tried to speak with the girl but she did not respond, police said.

“There’s no indication of foul play at this time,” Johnson said. “That’s why it’s still a mystery to us.”
