BREAKING NEWS:

Divers with the Orange County Sheriff’s Harbor Patrol retrieved what may be human remains Friday afternoon in Corona del Mar, near the location where a man and woman were swept from the east jetty in heavy surf in April.

The three divers entered the water around 1:15 p.m. to continue the search for Irvine resident Yi Ni Kwong, Orange County Sheriff’s Lt. Erin Giudice said.

Officials believe Kwong, 49, and Sean Shungfei Yeh, 53, of Fremont, were fishing April 10 when a wave knocked them into the water. Yeh’s body was found near Inspiration Point three days later.

On Friday, Giudice said, “We came up with what appear to be human remains, to be turned over to coroner’s office for identification.”

In June, six divers found a pelvic bone and what appeared to be human flesh 20 feet below the ocean’s surface, but those remains were never positively identified.

Orange County coroners have yet to determine whether the remains found Friday are human.

“We’re hoping the coroner will verify that they’re the missing female,” Newport Beach Police Sgt. Evan Sailor said.
