Body pulled from water

A man who recently drowned in Huntington Beach has been identified as Lauro Ma, authorities said. The 20-year-old lived in Irvine, according to the Orange County Coroner’s office.

Rescue workers pulled Ma’s body from the water Friday afternoon, police said.

A lifeguard saw someone in distress about 4:40 p.m., called for help and tried to rescue him, Lt. Craig Bryant said. With help from rescue workers in a helicopter, lifeguards eventually found Ma an hour later. But when they dragged him to shore and tried to resuscitate him, it was too late.

The drowning came at the end of a long, extremely busy week in which lifeguards had an otherwise-flawless rescue record.

On Fourth of July alone, lifeguards warned people out of dangerous situations roughly 11,000 times, made about 175 ocean rescues, gave minor medical aid to 25 people, and found all 25 children reported lost that day, Marine Safety Chief Kyle Lindo said. No one was seriously injured, and only three people were taken away by ambulance — likely because of a twisted ankle or something similar, he said.

“[The Fourth of July] was very busy for us as lifeguards, but there were no major incidents,” he said.
