A service will be held for Sgt. Major Joseph W. Dailey at 11 a.m. Monday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Stake Center, 2150 Bonita Canyon Drive, Newport Beach.
Dailey, a Newport Beach resident who retired from the Marines in 1973, died Thursday of natural causes at age 90.
Dailey served honorably in World War II and was awarded the Silver Star for conspicuous gallantry of action in the battle of Okinawa. He served in the Korean War, where he earned the Navy Cross, the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart. He also served in Vietnam, where, in 1969, he was promoted to Sergeant Major, the highest ranking an enlisted person can achieve.
Dailey came to Newport Beach about 15 years ago.
He is survived by his wife, June, who served as a Navy nurse in World War II, two daughters from a previous marriage, Connie Nicholson and Janis Murphy, and 14 grandchildren.
