BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

PUERTO ESCONDIDO, Mexico — Courtney Conlogue celebrated Independence Day by being part of a momentous surfing accomplishment.

Conlogue, who will be a sophomore at Sage Hill School, contributed to the USA Team that won the gold medal in the inaugural women’s surfing event for the X Games 13 on the Fourth of July.

The top women surfers from around the globe were split into teams: USA vs. World. Conlogue’s USA team defeated the World, 55-52. Melanie Bartels of the USA team came away with MVP honors, scoring a high of 8.5 on the first run amid 6-to-8-foot waves. Conlogue scored a 5, 3 and a 3.5 on her three runs.

She won the Billabong Junior Pro in Puerto Rico back in March. Conlogue is one of the top teen-age surfers in the nation, and earlier this year she was called the country’s most dominant 14-year-old surfer by Sports Illustrated.
