Capt. John Klein will be sworn in today as the new Newport Beach police chief during a brief ceremony at 9 a.m. at the City Hall chambers on the Balboa Peninsula, officials said.
Klein, 50, replaces Bob McDonell, who announced his retirement two years ago and served as police chief for nearly 14 years.
Klein, a 27-year department veteran, was one of three captains in the city’s police department. He has worked as a narcotics and crimes-against-persons detective, an executive assistant, and 18 years in the SWAT unit.
To prepare for his new job, Klein shadowed McDonell to learn about his role as chief.
