MAILBAG:Ground Zero workers need America’s help

In John Campbell’s response to the workers and citizens on or near Ground Zero after 9/11 (“That’s Debatable,” June 28), it seems he suggests they might apply to Al Qaeda for necessary health care due to their exposure to chemicals after the bombing.

The logic of this retort seems to echo the responses of other neo-cons in their constant illogic toward all Arab countries, even though the terrorists were largely from Saudi Arabia.

My question is: Did Campbell visit Ground Zero soon after the attack? My friend and I did. We hiked long distances as the subways were damaged for miles around the area. The smell was something I will never forget. The label “chemical soup” defines the stench. Workers in “the Pit” were assured they were not in danger. Many of those workers are now dying due to pulmonary diseases caused by that “soup.”

They were also heroes and need help now for their care. How humane are we as Americans to deny them help?

Many of our friends asked, “Aren’t you afraid to go?” It is an experience we will never forget. New York was in such a state of grief and shock, and as a therapist, I listened and listened. You should have been there, Mr. Campbell, you would understand a bit more.
