BRIEFS:Patterson named Sailor of Year

Several sailors from area high schools have been named to the 2007 Intercollegiate Sailing Assn. of North America (ICSA) All-America sailing teams.

Corona del Mar High product Adrienne Patterson is the Quantum Female College Sailor of the Year after the junior led St. Mary’s College (Md.) to the women’s national championship in Norfolk, Va. on May 25.

Newport Harbor High graduates Taylor Grimes and Whitney Loufek both earned ICSA All-America honorable mention. Grimes is a sophomore at Stanford, and helped the Cardinal women to a third-place finish at nationals by helming the B Division bat.

Loufek, a senior at UC Irvine, finished second individually in the A Division at nationals, helping the Anteaters to a fourth-place finish at nationals in the co-ed division.

Carly Chamberlain, another Newport Harbor High product who is a sophomore at Georgetown, was named ICSA All-American Crew.

Also on that list was Killarney Loufek, yet another Newport Harbor graduate who is a senior at Dartmouth.

Patterson, St. Marys’ A-Division skipper, is the first St. Mary’s Seahawk to win College Sailor of the Year, and it is her second straight year earning ICSA All-American recognition.

She helped the Seahawks edge College of Charleston last month to win just their second national championship, and first since 1995.

UCI senior Frank Tybor was also named to the co-ed All-American team for the third time in his career.
