Ross and Boss suffer upset in Charleston

Sixth-seeded Jennifer Boss and April Ross were one of two pairs that were upset at the Assn. of Volleyball Professionals Charleston Open Friday.
Boss and Ross, a Newport Harbor product, lost to No. 11 Angela Lewis and Priscilla Lima, 21-17, 21-15, in the second round of the tournament, sending them for a long journey back to the finals if they win the battle through the losers’ bracket.
On the men’s side, twelfth-seeded Ty Loomis and Hans Stolfus defeated No. 5 Matt Olson and Jason Ring 22-20, 21-18.
Fellow Newport Harbor alum Misty-May Treanor and partner Kerri Walsh handily advanced to Saturday’s matches undefeated as they look for their eighth straight tournament win.
Jake Gibb, a Costa Mesa resident, and Sean Rosenthal advanced to Saturday as the top seed, defeating No. 9-seed Casey Jennings and Mark Williams 13-21, 21-16, 15-11in the third round.
They are seeking their third straight tournament win.
