CDM PLAYERS CONTRIBUTE

ANAHEIM — Corona del Mar High baseball players Jake Lemmerman were part of the South’s 6-4 victory over the North in the Orange County All-Star game at Glover Stadium.

Lemmerman, the Duke-bound senior, went one for two with a single and a run, while Elliott, who will attend Orange Coast College, was hitless on two at bats.

Corona del Mar Coach John Emme watched the game.

“It just shows how great of seasons those two kids had,” Emme said. “To be in the top 20 in South County is a great honor for them. Obviously, it bodes well on the program.”

TWO ON NATIONAL TEAM

Newport Harbor High product Melissa Wheeler and Corona del Mar High product Camille Hewko are used to playing against each other in water polo.

But they are now on the same team — in more ways than one.

The pair of UC Berkeley standouts have been named to the United States Junior National Team, which will compete in the FINA Junior World Championships beginning in Portugal on July 23.

Wheeler, 20 and currently a sophomore at Cal, scored six goals for the Golden Bears this season. She was also named to the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation All-Academic Team for her 3.31 grade-point average.

Wheeler, a two-meter defender, scored eight goals for Cal as a freshman and has also played with the U.S. National B Team. At Newport Harbor, she was first-team All-Sea View League and first-team All-CIF Division I as a senior, and she led the Tars to the 2004 Division I title.

Hewko, 18 and a freshman driver at Cal, scored seven goals for the Golden Bears this season. As a senior at CdM in 2006, she was the CIF Division II Player of the Year and the Daily Pilot Newport-Mesa Player of the Year, leading the Sea Kings to their fifth consecutive CIF title. Hewko was also a two-time Sea View League Player of the Year.

Cal, which also features former Newport Harbor goalie Elizabeth Layton and CdM product Katya Eadington (defender), finished 12-11 this season and placed ninth in the MPSF tournament.
