New managing editor comes aboard Pilot

Brady Rhoades, a veteran journalist knowledgeable about the issues and personalities that make up the Newport-Mesa community, has been named the new managing editor of the Daily Pilot, announced Tony Dodero, the director of news and online.

Rhoades has been both a writer and an editor and most recently assistant managing editor for the San Gabriel Valley newspapers, which includes the San Gabriel Valley Tribune, the Pasadena Star News and the Whittier Daily News.

Prior to that, Rhoades was the city editor for the Newport Beach Light and Costa Mesa Breeze, the two weekly papers published by the Orange County Register.

As managing editor, Rhoades will directly supervise the reporting, copy and design, photo and sports desks for the Pilot, the Huntington Beach Independent and the Coastline Pilot in Laguna Beach. He also will oversee the opinion pages and staff editorials.

“I’m excited to join the fine team at the Daily Pilot and look forward to the innovative work necessary to continue serving the readers of the Newport-Mesa community and also meet the challenges facing our industry,” Rhoades said.

Publisher Tom Johnson said Rhoades will be good for the paper.

“Brady is a welcome edition to the Daily Pilot editorial staff,” Johnson said. “He brings leadership and experience that should bode well for our journalists, the paper and, in fact, the community overall.”

In a related move, Paul Anderson has been named city editor of the Daily Pilot and Independent and Elizabeth Glazner has been named features and arts and entertainment editor for both papers as well.

Anderson, who previously was the business and features editor, is a 20-year newspaper veteran and has been a city editor for a number of years working at papers published by the Pilot’s parent company, Times Community News, including the Glendale News-Press and Burbank Leader, the Simi Valley Our Times and the Inland Valley Voice. Prior to being a city editor, Anderson was a reporter for several newspapers and at City News Bureau in Chicago. Anderson has also been an integral part of the website operations at all of the Times Community Newspapers.

Glazner has been a key member of the copy and design desk team of the Daily Pilot and its sister papers for the last two years. Prior to that she was the founding editor of Wahine magazine, a surfing publication devoted to female surfers, and also the entertainment editor for the Santa Clarita Signal.

Glazner is also a veteran freelance writer contributing to the Los Angeles Times and OC Weekly, to name a few.

“It’s always nice to see the employees in our organization that go the extra mile be rewarded,” Johnson said. “Paul and Elizabeth both fall into that category.”
