Corona del Mar High junior Fabian Matthews and sophomore Cierra Gaytan-Leach, playing as partners in the open mixed doubles division, have advanced to the semifinals of the 46th annual Roy Emerson Adoption Guild Classic at Newport Beach Tennis Club.

Matthews and Gaytan-Leach will play No. 1-seeded Deborah Graham of Anaheim and Andy Stewart of Mesa Verde in a semifinal today at 3 p.m. Should they win, they could play No. 2-seeded Matthew Loucks of Newport Beach and Lyndsay Kinstler of Laguna Beach in the championship match on Sunday.

CdM senior Jill Damion, who is bound for UC Santa Barbara, is still alive in both the Adoption Guild women’s open singles and doubles draws. In singles, Damion is scheduled to play No. 1-seeded USC senior Dianne Matias in a semifinal today at 11 a.m. at Newport Beach Tennis Club.

In doubles, unseeded Damion and partner Micaela Hein of Mission Viejo play Matias and USC teammate Judith Devara, the No. 2 seed, in a semifinal today at 3 p.m., also at Newport Beach Tennis Club.

Still alive in the adult NTRP rated divisions of women’s doubles are CdM’s Colleen Scanlon (women’s 5.0 doubles), Costa Mesa’s Liz Archer (women’s 5.5 doubles), Christy Akin of NBTC and Donna Pang of Newport Beach (women’s 4.5 doubles), and the women’s 3.5 doubles team of Julie Allione of Newport Beach and Lorene McCormick of Costa Mesa.

Richard Merrill of Newport Beach is still alive in men’s 3.5 doubles, as is Paul Cross of Newport Beach in men’s 6.0 doubles. In mixed doubles, Vid Martinez of CdM and Carol Soto of NBTC remain in the draw.
